lifedeathetc / livd÷detc, haiku by Anna Maris> $15.00
by Ben Moeller-Gaa Date Added: Sunday 09 October, 2016
I really enjoyed this book and have read it several times already. Following the form of the title, the book is divided into three sections, Life, Death and Etc. That said, there is an over-arching theme to me of the transience of humanity in this world and the acknowledgment that nature will endure. In the current environment of election year politics and self-absorption of the always on selfie update, the book is a welcome breath of fresh air. Here are some examples of what I mean:

(from Life)

long shadows
after the siege has lifted
a lone crane

(from Death)

winterĺs bone
in the frozen footprints
fresh powder snow

(from Etc)

high-speed train
along the railway line
wild apple trees

I also enjoyed the books formatting of one poem per page, which allows the reader to really slow down and consider each haiku. The inclusion of the Swedish version printed in gray just below the English, acts like an echo to the reader, reminding us not only that the poet is at least bilingual, but also that the world is a bigger place than any one language. It adds a nice subtle subtext to a book of extremely well crafted and engaging haiku, one that I look forward to re-reading again and again.
